Crete Churches, Greece

2015-07-04

Esthetically striking and simple in design, I’ve become mesmerized with the churches on Crete. Tucked into the sides of large mountains, they stand out despite their modest stature. The island is sprinkled with these beautiful buildings. Many are tiny, so tiny in fact, I can’t help but wonder how people even fit in them. Stepping inside can make you feel like a giant, everything seems shrunken.

Many mini replicas are placed along the roadside. These are memorials built by families who have lost a loved one to accidents. Frequent reminders of  Crete’s winding, dangerous roads that no amount of faith can protect from.
